Voice cloning is now in Early Access. I'm so excited about the possibilities this feature unlocks. It’s designed to help you scale your content creation while maintaining the unique, personal touch of your own voice.

I've put together this guide to help you prepare the perfect audio sample to create your professional-sounding voice clone.

While Elora is powerful, the meditations she creates are only as good as the audio you provide her. Following these tips will give you the best possible outcome.

Key Takeaways: How to Record Your Voice Sample

  • Microphone. Use a quality USB mic, positioned 6-8 inches from your mouth.
  • Location. Record in a small, quiet, echo-free room (like a closet). Eliminate all background noise (fans, A/C, traffic).
  • Length. Provide 1-2 minutes of clean, continuous speech.
  • Performance. Speak in the exact calm and steady tone you want your clone to have.
  • Volume. If your mic or recording software has a meter, keep your recording levels in the green/yellow range, never let them hit red.
  • Avoid. Long pauses, vocal fry, up-talk, and background noises (lip smacks, paper rustling).

Use a High-Quality Microphone

The single most important factor for a great voice clone is the quality of your recording.

Elora can't create a crisp, clear voice from a muffled or noisy sample. Think of it like cooking: you need the best ingredients to get the best result.

While you don't need a professional recording studio, your computer's built-in microphone or your phone probably won't be sufficient.

I highly recommend investing in a good USB microphone. Brands like Blue (the Blue Yeti is a creator classic for a reason and is what I use) or Rode offer fantastic, broadcast-quality sound for a reasonable price.

This one upgrade will make the biggest difference in your final voice clone (and impress your clients on video calls).

A creator classic for a reason.

Position the microphone about 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) from your mouth and slightly off to the side. Speaking directly into it can cause harsh sounds, while speaking slightly across it captures your voice's warmth.

Pro Tip: For an extra-professional touch, place a pop filter between you and the microphone. This inexpensive screen softens the harsh puffs of air from 'p' and 'b' sounds, resulting in a much smoother final recording.

Record at Least 1 Minute of Audio

When it comes to the length of your audio sample, there's a definite "goldilocks" zone.

The sweet spot is 1-2 minutes of clear, consistent audio.

This gives Elora enough data to learn the unique nuances of your voice. Recording more than 3 minutes, however, yields very little improvement and can sometimes even be detrimental to the final clone.

Remember, the quality of how the audio was recorded is far more important than the total length. It's better to have 90 seconds of pristine audio than 5 minutes of mediocre audio.

A quick note on file formats: whether it's a WAV or MP3 file isn't important. Focus instead on how the audio was captured. As long as you're using 128 kbps or higher, you'll be in great shape.

Consistency is Key

Elora is a meticulous student. She will learn and try to mimic everything she hears in your sample.

This includes not only your pacing, accent, and tonality but also your breathing patterns, mouth clicks, background noise, and any reverb from the room.

This is why consistency is so crucial. You need to provide her with a clean, clear, and consistent sample to learn from.

  • Consistent Quality. Ensure your recording is free of any reverb, artifacts, or background noise. The best way to do this is to record in a small, quiet space with soft surfaces. A walk-in closet filled with clothes is a classic home-studio trick that works wonders for dampening sound reflections!
  • Consistent Performance. Elora will replicate the performance you provide. If you want your digital voice to sound calm and meditative, your sample recording must be calm and meditative. Avoid large fluctuations in pitch and volume. Speak in the exact style you want the final voice to have, as this will produce the most predictable and reliable results.

What Should I Say in My Recording?

This is a question I get all the time, and the good news is, the answer is simple.

The specific words you say don't matter nearly as much as how you say them. Elora is learning the unique sound, cadence, and tone of your voice, not the vocabulary itself.

My best advice is to choose something you can read comfortably and smoothly without many interruptions.

Here are a few great options:

  • A past meditation script. This is often the perfect choice. You're already familiar with the pacing and can deliver it in the exact calm, meditative tone you want your voice clone to have.
  • A few paragraphs from a book. Pick something you enjoy reading, like a calming novel or a non-fiction book. The goal is to have text you can read naturally.
  • An article online. Find a few paragraphs of text online that you can read clearly and without stumbling.

Whatever you choose, the most important thing is to read it smoothly and consistently for 1-2 minutes in the exact voice you want Elora to replicate.

What to Avoid Doing

While Elora is a fantastic student, she isn't a mind reader. She will faithfully replicate the performance you give her, including any vocal tics or extraneous noises.

To ensure your digital voice is as polished and professional as possible, here are a few common pitfalls to avoid during your recording:

  • Long, Unnatural Pauses. While meditative speech has pauses, avoid lengthy silences in the sample recording itself. Aim for a smooth, continuous flow of speech.
  • Vocal Fry or Up-Talk. Be mindful of vocal habits like fry (a low, creaky sound at the end of sentences) or up-talk (ending statements with a rising inflection like a question). Elora will learn these habits, so deliver your lines in the clear, declarative tone you want for your final meditations.
  • Extraneous Noises. Avoid lip smacks, heavy breaths, or rustling paper. While some of these are unavoidable, a cleaner recording is always better. A quick sip of water before you start can help.

Find the Perfect Volume (Advanced)

For those who want to get a little more technical to perfect their sound, dialing in your recording volume can take your voice clone from great to incredible.

You want a signal that's strong but not so loud that it distorts (this is often called "clipping").

The ideal target is a volume level between -23 dB and -18 dB RMS, with the loudest parts of your speech (the "true peaks") never going above -3 dB. Most recording software has a digital meter that shows you these levels.

If that sounds like jargon, just follow this simple rule: speak at a normal, consistent volume and adjust your microphone's input so the meter stays consistently in the green/yellow range, and never hits the red.

Your "Before You Record" Checklist

Ready to create your sample? Run through this quick checklist to ensure you capture the perfect audio.

  • Quiet Space. Are you in a room with minimal echo and no background noise (like fans, A/C, or street traffic)?
  • Quality Mic. Is your USB microphone plugged in, selected as your audio source, and positioned a few inches from your mouth?
  • Perfect Volume. Are your recording levels consistently in the green/yellow range and never hitting the red?
  • Consistent Performance. Are you ready to speak in a calm, even, and meditative tone for the entire recording?
  • Script Ready. Do you have your chosen text in front of you so you can read smoothly for 1-2 minutes without long, unnatural pauses?

Your Perfect Clone Awaits

Creating your voice clone is a simple process, and taking a few extra minutes to get your sample audio right will pay massive dividends.

A high-quality sample leads to a beautiful voice clone that truly sounds like you, allowing you to create more content for your clients in a fraction of the time.

I can't wait to hear what you create!
